About EXETER... Exeter is one of the classier places to visit in Devon, though no-one is sure whether that was what first attracted the Romans to it! Evidence of their occupation of Exeter is easy to see, with remarkable ruins incorporated in several open spaces around the city centre. Its centrepiece is the Cathedral, much admired and loved by millions, one of the more famous of them being Prince Charles, who has taken a life-long interest in its preservation. The Cathedral Close area has some very special shops and the very elegant Royal Clarence Hotel with is Champagne Bar and restaurant run by chef Michael Caine. The main shopping streets are only yards away, and are a focal point for people from most of the surrounding towns and villages. Exeter is smart, and is home to one of the country's most popular and prestigious universities.
