About BEER... Beer, a picture-postcard fishing village tucked into the Devon coast, still wears its maritime heritage proudly, with romantic wooden boats to gaze at, nets strewn about, and, if you're lucky, a weather-beaten fisherman to pass the time with. Local families can trace their links with the sea back for generations, while others are happy to tell stories of the smugglers who haunted the place in days gone by because of its high cliffs and sheltered position. Most unusually, a stream runs beside the pavement through Beer before merging with the sea on the beautiful beach which is overlooked by the glorious public gardens on the cliffs high above. Beer's womenfolk used to be world-renowned for their lace-making, while limestone from the area - first extracted from caves by the Romans - has been used in public buildings including Buckingham Palace.
